Why come to a sing-along?

What if I don't know how to sing Messiah?

What if I come with friends, and we sing different parts?

Could I just come to listen?

Why come to a sing-along?

Seattle Sings Messiah provides the "best of both worlds" for Messiah fans. The orchestral and solo parts are performed by professionals, allowing the audience to experience the full benefit of attending a professional performance of Messiah. When it comes time for the magnificent choruses, however, you won't have to suppress that urge to jump up and sing! Because our sing-along audience is large, it invariably contains many, many singers who know the piece very well, and who function essentially as section leaders for those around them.  This makes the choral sound quite wonderful, so there is no compromise on the quality of the performance.

You will feel this glorious oratorio in your soul by participating in Seattle Sings Messiah, a unique connection unmatched by any traditional performance ... or other sing-alongs.

What if I don't know how to sing Messiah?

You can prepare in a number of ways. Come join us at Learn It With Lou, where we prepare intensively to sing the Messiah choruses ... but not too intensively to have a great time!  Scores are available for purchase at the classes.  We also have available part-enhanced training CDs that contain the more difficult/rarely sung Messiah choruses.

If you prefer to prepare on your own, you may order your own training CD directly online from Sing Harmony.  Sing Harmony also has free, downloadable PDF sheet music for the choruses.  Traditional scores can be ordered from the Pepper Music Network, or locally from Capitol Music, located at 718 Virginia Street in Seattle (206-622-0171).  Pepper and Capitol also sell part-enhanced training CDs/tapes; however, these may not contain the rarely-sung choruses.

Or just come to listen.

What if I come with friends, and we sing different parts?

Our audience-chorus members have approached this issue in different ways. The group may all sit together with the stronger singers sitting in a section other than their own (e.g., strong tenors may choose to sit with their friends in the bass section). They also may all decide to sit together toward the back or other "unmarked" location, where most folks are not separated into parts. Or the group members may all go to their respective sections and meet up at intermission. Choose whatever works for your group!

Could I just come to listen?

Absolutely! We provide an excellent professional performance of Messiah at a price you will be hard pressed to match. We've heard from many non-singers who were "dragged" by their singing friends, and they had a wonderful time.  If you sit towards the back you will get the best blended sound from the chorus.

Learn It With Lou 2004

Optional class/rehearsal series
Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM

November 16, 29
December 7, 14, 21

Classes will take place once again at Wallingford United Methodist Church, 2115 N 42nd St (at Bagley--here's a map).

"All we like sheep" need stray no more! Once again, conductor Louis Magor, a master Messiah teacher, will provide educational (and entertaining!) sessions with those eager to learn the many Messiah passages that baffle and befuddle the average singer. We'll work on all the choruses, concentrating on the more difficult, so that by December 28th we can sing Messiah with confidence.

Even if you have attended Learn It With Lou in the past, join us again! You don't want to miss Lou's Thanksgiving-in-Nebraska stories, Cookie Night, or our elegant diplomas! And once again this year, you will have the privilege of being accompanied by the amazing "flying fingers" of Robert Kechley, our Baroque harpsichordist extraordinaire each year at Seattle Sings Messiah.

Lectures by Perry Lorenzo

Once again this year, we are delighted to offer two lectures by Perry Lorenzo, Seattle Opera's Education Director.

Seattle Opera patrons, who typically flock to each of Mr. Lorenzo's popular pre-performance lectures, can tell you what a treat it is to hear his "witty and fast-paced" talks (as one of our attendees has noted, "I would listen to him read the phone book!").  Mr. Lorenzo's lectures will provide fascinating reflections about Handel and the musical, political, historical and cultural context in which he composed Messiah, as well as insights into the music and libretto.

  • Messiah pre-performance lecture, Saturday, December 27th, 6:00-6:45 PM, Town Hall Seattle
